About us

ISMGEO is an independent experimental geotechnics laboratory. We provide reliable data to design major civil engineering works and to mitigate natural hazards such as landslides, floods and earthquakes.

Our Seriate headquarters, with about 3000 m² of laboratories.

The ISMES heritage

ISMGEO was founded in 2000, after ISMES (Istituto Sperimentale Modelli e Strutture) was wound up, by researchers and technicians of its geotechnical division. The new company took over the staff, about 3000 square metres of laboratories, the in-situ and laboratory testing equipment, the physical modelling facilities and the technical procedures.

That kept decades of know-how intact, together with the quality of the ISMES tradition. Today ISMGEO is a stable reference for engineering companies and research institutions working in geotechnics.

What we aim for

  • Providing high-quality geotechnical and geomechanical data to support civil engineering design.
  • Actively linking professional practice and research.

Who we work for

We work for engineering companies, contractors, consultants, public authorities, universities and research institutes. We collaborate with Italian and international universities, host researchers, PhD and MSc students and share our facilities and expertise.

We also advise private companies that develop innovative technologies and large civil engineering projects of worldwide relevance.

From ISMES to ISMGEO

  1. 1988

The ISMES geotechnical centrifuge, the first in Italy, comes into operation.

  2. 2000

Researchers and technicians of the ISMES geotechnical division found ISMGEO and take over laboratories, machines and procedures.

  3. 2006

Ministerial authorisation no. 55126 for soil, rock and in-situ testing, classes A, B and C.

  4. 2010

The centrifuge is fitted with an earthquake simulator and becomes a seismic centrifuge.

  5. Today

About 3000 m² of laboratories serving major projects, public authorities and international research.
